Lower Rio Huancabamba

Tom Leeman
Approximately 15km long, this stretch can be done as a day run. Putting on at the entrance to the National Park, there is a small track to an office building where it is possible to access a small tributary to hike down to the river. The take is at the town of Pozuzo, where there are a number of hotels where one can stay the night. This grade 4/4+ run is one of the best day runs we did in Peru. The road follows the river all the way, although the gorged nature of the river makes it difficult to access the road from the river places. We portaged one grade 5 rapid, but there are no mandatory portages on the run. The first two km up until the footbridge are the hardest, with the river easing off slightly after this.
